Kolkwitz implements sustainable building using repurposed DDR concrete slabs

A new multipurpose building in Kolkwitz is being constructed using repurposed concrete slabs from former East German (DDR) structures. The project, known as the ReUse-Hub, serves as a model for sustainable construction within Europe.

Developed through the Horizon 2020 ‘ReCreate’ research project by the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg, the method involves inspecting and preparing old slabs for use as load-bearing components rather than crushing them into gravel. The facility will house the Kolkwitzer SV 1896 sports club, a garage, a ticket office, and spaces for local council, education, and cultural activities.

Funding for the project is split between the European research initiative for the shell construction and the Structural Strengthening Act for the interior fit-out and equipment.
