Kolombong solar plant begins commercial operations in Sabah

The Kolombong large-scale solar plant has commenced commercial operations, completing the project 40 days ahead of its original schedule. The facility, which began operating on October 17, has a transmission capacity of 15 megawatt alternating current (MWac) and an installed solar capacity of 22.5 megawatt peak (MWp).

Developed and owned by TG Solar Sdn Bhd under the Teck Guan Group, the plant is the first large-scale solar project to complete the full planning, implementation, and completion process under the regulation of the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) through the LSS-Sabah 2024 program. The plant is expected to supply approximately 33.4 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually to the Sabah grid, meeting the electricity needs of more than 9,000 homes.

ECoS Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ir. Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid stated that the early completion reflects the commitment and coordination between developers, contractors, government departments, and utilities. The project was awarded through a competitive bidding process, demonstrating the capability of local developers to execute large-scale renewable energy projects.
