Kolonos: Schools evacuated after natural gas pipe damage

Authorities conducted a precautionary evacuation of several schools in the Kolonos area of Athens on Thursday morning following a natural gas leak. The incident occurred around 08:40 during underground lighting network repair works at the intersection of Distomou pedestrian walkway and Tripoleos Street.

Panos Charlaftis, Deputy Mayor of Technical Services for the Municipality of Athens, stated that a crew repairing underground wiring accidentally damaged a gas pipe. According to the municipality, the pipe lacked proper identification, appearing black without yellow stripes, and the marking grid was white instead of yellow, providing no indication of natural gas.

The affected educational institutions included the 57th and 61st Primary Schools, as well as the 55th and 116th Kindergartens of Athens. The Fire Service attended the scene as a precaution, and gas supply was halted by closing the valve. Enaon EDA teams are currently working to repair the pipe, and lighting works will resume once the area is secured.
