Antarctica Exhibition to feature ice cores and meteorites at Miraikan

The Miraikan will host a special exhibition titled ‘Great Antarctica Exhibition’ from July 1 to September 27, 2026. The event commemorates 70 years of Japanese Antarctic research and aims to provide an immersive experience regarding the continent's role in understanding global climate change.

Key features of the exhibition include the display of authentic Antarctic ice cores, including a 340,000-year-old sample drilled from a depth of 2,499 meters. Visitors can also interact with real Antarctic meteorites, including rare samples from the Moon and Mars.

Other interactive elements include a simulated blizzard experience to demonstrate the harsh conditions faced by research teams at Showa Station, and displays of biological specimens such as penguins and seals to illustrate the local ecosystem.
