Komatsu Matere receives certification for CABKOMA seismic retrofitting
Komatsu Matere Co., Ltd., a textile manufacturer based in Ishikawa Prefecture, has received architectural technology performance certification from the Building Research Institute (GBRC) for its CABKOMA method. This new technology utilizes thermoplastic carbon fiber composite strands to reinforce the horizontal planes of steel-frame roofs.
The CABKOMA method addresses the challenges of seismic retrofitting for older factories and warehouses, particularly those built before 1981. Traditional steel brace methods often require heavy machinery and long construction periods that force facilities to halt operations. In contrast, the carbon fiber strands are significantly lighter—one-fifth the density of steel—allowing for installation using minimal scaffolding without disrupting factory production.
Company President Daisuke Nakayama noted that the technology was inspired by traditional 'kumihimo' braiding techniques. The effectiveness of the method was demonstrated during the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, where buildings reinforced with CABKOMA remained undamaged despite intense shaking. Experts highlight the method's potential for reducing construction costs, shortening project timelines by approximately 45%, and offering environmental advantages through reduced maintenance and transport needs.
