KOMCA nears settlement with Apple Music over five years of unpaid royalties
The Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) is in the final stages of negotiating a settlement with Apple Music regarding approximately five years of unpaid music royalties. The dispute covers usage fees accrued from the second quarter of 2021 through 2025.
The impasse originated in 2024 following a unilateral contract termination notice issued by the association’s former permanent secretary-general. Negotiations gained momentum following the installation of KOMCA’s 25th board of directors earlier this year.
Both parties aim to finalize the agreement before the end of the year. Once concluded, funds will be distributed to lyricists, composers, and other music creators. Discussions also include establishing updated calculation criteria to align compensation with modern digital streaming models.
