Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital reports decline in maternal deaths and opens fertility centre

Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, Ghana, has reported its first decline in maternal deaths in ten years. According to CEO Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, institutional maternal deaths dropped from 78 at the mid-year point in 2025 to 55 in 2026.

This reduction is attributed to the operationalization of a dedicated maternal Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The unit is staffed by anesthesia and intensive care specialists to manage high-risk obstetric cases. While the unit features an eight-bed support room, currently only four beds are in use.

Additionally, KATH has completed construction of an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Centre. This facility makes KATH the first public-sector health institution in Ghana to offer specialized fertility services, a field previously dominated by the private sector. The centre is expected to be fully operational by the end of August 2026.
