Kommentár Alapítvány denies fraud allegations by Hungarian Prime Minister's Office

The Hungarian Prime Minister's Office has filed a report with the National Investigation Bureau against the Kommentár Alapítvány (Commentary Foundation), alleging breach of trust, abuse of office, and budgetary fraud. The investigation concerns state subsidies totaling 27.8 billion HUF provided to the foundation between 2020 and 2026.

The Prime Minister's Office stated that the funding covered annual operating costs, the renovation of the Tranzit House, a community center on Puskin utca 4, and the purchase and development of property in Balatonszepezdi. Officials cited concerns regarding operating subsidies that allegedly multiplied through unique decisions without competitive bidding, potential risks in public procurement processes, and controversial reports regarding the Tranzit House renovations.

The Kommentár Alapítvány, which publishes the quarterly journal Kommentár and organizes the Tranzit Festival, has denied all allegations. The organization stated that the report “lacks any legal and factual basis” and emphasized that it has operated in compliance with legal regulations for two decades. The foundation's editor-in-chief is historian and publicist Márton Békés.
