Komnas Perempuan advocates for survivor autonomy in abortion decisions

The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) is advocating for sexual violence survivors to have the right to make autonomous decisions regarding pregnancy and abortion without coercion. During a media briefing in Jakarta, Commission Chair Maria Ulfah Anshor emphasized that the goal is not to push a specific decision, but to ensure survivors can decide based on complete information and safety.

Data from Komnas Perempuan between 2021 and 2025 recorded 737 cases of sexual violence, with nearly half of the victims being children. The commission also noted 225 cases related to abortion, of which 203 involved coercion by the perpetrator. Anshor highlighted that the primary challenges faced by survivors include pressure from perpetrators, difficult circumstances, or a lack of access to information.
