Komoot enables offline navigation on Wear OS smartwatches

Komoot has released an update for its route planning app that allows Wear OS-based smartwatches to function independently of a smartphone. While Apple Watches have previously supported standalone use, this update extends similar capabilities to Android-based devices from manufacturers such as Samsung, Google, and OnePlus.

Key new features include full offline map functionality, intuitive turn-by-turn instructions via visual and vibration signals, and the ability to record tracks directly on the watch. The update also introduces automatic re-routing if a user deviates from a planned path, customizable real-time statistics, and an offline cache for multiple tours. To preserve battery life, the app utilizes a simplified map view for Always-on displays.

Komoot is also developing additional features for upcoming release, including live-syncing route changes made on a phone, real-time location sharing, distance information for points of interest, and a climb function to display upcoming inclines and remaining ascent duration.
