Komáromi Vízművek starts cross‑border flood‑risk project in Komárno
Komáromi Vízművek és Csatornázási Vállalat (KOMVaK) is implementing a cross‑border flood‑risk management and water‑resource project covering Komárno, Slovakia and the neighbouring Hungarian municipality of Nagykovácsi. Funded under the Hungary‑Slovakia Interreg programme, the initiative has a budget of €307,005, of which the European Union contributes €245,604.
The project introduces modern rain‑water handling measures, including underground infiltration structures, surface ditches, rain gardens, linear drainage channels and pre‑filtration units. In Nagykovácsi a 15,000 m³ retention basin will be built and the banks of the Ördögárok stream stabilised, while in Komárno works focus on the Nezábudková, Čajakova and Bažantia districts, the city’s most flood‑prone areas. The measures aim to lower pressure on existing drainage networks, replenish groundwater, improve micro‑climate and increase safety for residents and public spaces amid more intense precipitation linked to climate change.
