KOMSA to inspect 12 state-funded passenger ships for public route transition

The Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority (KOMSA) has announced a comprehensive safety inspection of 12 state-funded passenger ships. This initiative is a preparatory measure ahead of the transition to publicly operated maritime routes scheduled for 2027.

The inspections will take place from May 26 to June 7, covering 11 routes across three regions, including Incheon, Daesan, and Gunsan. Expert inspection teams, consisting of at least two specialists such as ship inspectors and operation managers, will evaluate the vessels based on four key areas: hulls, engines, safety equipment, and passenger/crew amenities.

KOMSA intends to use the findings to identify necessary repairs and maintenance early. The data collected will serve as a foundation for establishing systematic vessel management systems and maintenance plans to ensure safe sea travel for island residents and the general public.
