Komshiluk wins New European Bauhaus prize for community opera project

The cultural initiative Komshiluk has been awarded the New European Bauhaus 2026 prize by the European Commission. The recognition was presented in Brussels on October 15 in the ‘Rising Stars’ category, specifically within the theme of ‘Strengthening Local Democracy and Inclusion’.

The award honors the project ‘La Traviata in Three Acts’, an adaptation of Giuseppe Verdi’s famous opera set within the Železara neighborhood of Skopje. Instead of a traditional opera house, the production utilized the balconies, windows, and spaces between six residential buildings as a stage, turning local residents into active participants. Unlike the original tragic opera, this version featured a happy ending with a large wedding celebration involving the entire neighborhood.

Founder Stefan Aleksandar Jovanovski stated that being a good citizen begins with being a good neighbor, noting that the project emphasizes solidarity, sustainability, and community. The production involved approximately 150 people, including over 100 local residents, and was watched by roughly 2,000 visitors. The award opens possibilities for the concept to be implemented in other cities by adapting to local spaces and communities.
