Kongsberg tests containerized Naval Strike Missile launch system
Kongsberg has successfully tested a new containerized transport and launch system for its Naval Strike Missile (NSM) cruise missiles. The prototype, tested at a military range in Norway in early October, utilizes a standard 20-foot ISO container to house four NSM missiles.
The system is designed for rapid deployment and versatility, capable of being mounted on trucks for land-based coastal defense, stationary positions, or maritime platforms including both manned and unmanned vessels. This configuration offers double the missile capacity of the US Marine Corps' NMESIS system, which carries two missiles.
The NSM is a high-precision, low-observability cruise missile with an operational range exceeding 250–300 kilometers. It utilizes GPS guidance combined with an advanced dual-band passive imaging infrared seeker for autonomous target recognition and sea-skimming flight profiles to penetrate ship defenses.
