Konkuk University selected for AI researcher support project
Konkuk University has been selected for the ‘2026 AI Top-tier Young Researcher Support Project,’ a program led by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP). Working alongside Jeju National University, Konkuk University will participate as a joint research and development institution.
The research team, led by Professor Kim Hak-soo and including four other professors from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, aims to develop ‘AI Unit’ technology. This approach involves dividing key AI functions—such as knowledge, reasoning, and safety—into modular units that can be selected, assembled, and updated. This modularity is intended to reduce the costs of developing and maintaining AI models by allowing specific functions to be replaced or combined without retraining the entire model from scratch.
The project includes developing core technologies and conducting empirical research for industrial applications in sectors like security and medicine. Collaborations are planned with NC AI for foundation models, Mesacure Company for security technology, and AIVIS for medical AI verification. The ultimate goal is to establish an open ‘AI Assembly Platform’ where external researchers and companies can register, verify, and deploy their own AI units.
