Konotopie inaugurates Europe's tallest Virgin Mary statue

A massive 55.6-meter statue of the Virgin Mary, known as the Mother of Mercy, has been inaugurated in Konotopie, Poland. The monument is the tallest statue of the Virgin Mary in Europe, surpassing the height of the Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro.

The project was privately funded by businessman Roman Karkosik and his wife Grażyna as an act of gratitude following a serious illness. The structure consists of a 40.6-meter figure and a 15-meter crown-shaped pedestal that includes a viewing terrace intended to boost local tourism in the rural region.

The consecration ceremony, held on the Feast of the Assumption, included a mass led by Bishop Krzysztof Wętkowski and featured performances by the Mazowsze folk ensemble. Helicopters showered the monument with rose petals during the event. Notable attendees included former Polish President Lech Wałęsa. While intended as a spiritual site for pilgrimage, the project has drawn some local debate regarding the use of private wealth for large-scale religious monuments.
