Konstantin Veliki Airport celebrates 40 years of operation

Konstantin Veliki Airport in Niš is celebrating 40 years of operation. The airport officially opened on October 12, 1986, marked by an aeromiting and the landing of a JAT Boeing 737-300 from Belgrade.

Historically, the site has deep aviation roots dating back to 1934 at Medoševac Airport, which saw its first scheduled civil passenger route in 1935 connecting Belgrade, Niš, Skopje, Bitola, and Thessaloniki. Following the Second World War, the site served the Yugoslav Air Force before civilian flights returned in the early 1970s.

Today, the airport serves as a vital transport link for southern and southeastern Serbia. Mihajlo Zdravković, Director of Airports of Serbia, noted that the facility is a key instrument for regional economic and tourism development. Recent milestones include the opening of a new passenger terminal on July 23, 2024, and record-breaking passenger numbers in 2023. The airport currently connects to 17 destinations.
