Konstantinos Firinidis jailed for embezzling NGO donations

Konstantinos Firinidis, the 37-year-old founder of the NGO 'Paidiki Chara', has been remanded in custody following his appearance before a Thessaloniki magistrate. He faces charges of embezzling approximately 2.9 million euros in donations intended for children suffering from severe illnesses.

During his interrogation, Firinidis admitted to the embezzlement but contested the total amount, claiming that between 400,000 and 600,000 euros remained unpaid to families. He attributed his actions to a gambling addiction, stating he needed money for frequent betting. He denied living a luxurious lifestyle, instead claiming he suffered from megalomania and a desire to appear socially superior.

Investigations have revealed further allegations, including the involvement of his 35-year-old partner, Vasiliki Manisioti, who has also been remanded in custody. Reports suggest the couple may have manipulated fundraising efforts, including an incident where a bank account used by a mother to fund her daughter's cancer treatment was reportedly blocked. Additionally, authorities are looking into allegations of involvement in rigged football matches.

Firinidis appeared in court with facial injuries, which he claimed were the result of an attempted robbery. He is accused of using these injuries to elicit sympathy from donors. One victim's family has announced plans to file a formal legal complaint in Thessaloniki.
