Konya court reduces murder sentence to 18 years due to provocation

A Turkish court has finalized an 18-year prison sentence for a man who killed his cousin following a dispute over a 5,000 lira debt in the Meram district of Konya.

Approximately three years ago, 50-year-old Ömer Parlak shot and killed his 30-year-old cousin, Muhammet Bilal Parlak, with a shotgun. The conflict originated from a disagreement regarding unpaid money and a prior employment dispute.

While the Konya 6th High Criminal Court initially sentenced Ömer Parlak to life imprisonment for intentional homicide, the sentence was reduced to 18 years due to the legal principle of 'unjust provocation.' The court determined that the victim's alleged words, 'Shoot me if you are a man,' and the preceding verbal arguments constituted provocation. The Yargıtay (Court of Cassation) has since upheld this reduced sentence.
