Konya disability care center under investigation after violent assault

Security camera footage has revealed a violent incident at a private disability care and rehabilitation center in the Karatay district of Konya, Turkey. On June 2, three individuals with severe mental disabilities were reportedly locked in an activity room by staff for approximately two hours.

During this time, Ahmet İsmail Genç, who has speech impairments and cannot express himself, was attacked by two other residents. Halil İbrahim Gazioğlu repeatedly poked Genç in the eyes, causing significant bleeding, while Halil İbrahim Yalaz physically assaulted him by applying pressure to his legs. Footage shows Genç attempting to open the locked door to escape, while others kicked the door to call for help, but no assistance arrived until staff entered much later to find Genç covered in blood.

Medical examinations of Genç revealed hematomas around the eyes and lacerations to the eyelids, injuries described as requiring more than simple medical intervention. Following the incident, the Konya Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation. Several individuals have been detained, including social service specialist Ahmet S., the facility's responsible manager Ali Rıza K., a caregiver, the founding director Muhammet Hamza V., and a technician.
