Turkey energy sector: New gas regulations and smart meter targets
The Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) has released a draft regulation aimed at standardizing natural gas distribution across Turkey. The proposal seeks to unify technical operations, including emergency response protocols, maintenance standards, and the design of emergency vehicles to ensure consistency across 73 distribution companies. Key measures include mandatory training for field personnel, increased odorization of gas for leak detection, and protocols for inter-company support during disasters.
In the electricity sector, a workshop in Ankara highlighted the progress of the National Smart Meter System (MASS). Officials announced a target to install 3.4 million PRO-type smart meters over the next three years to facilitate remote access and smart grid development.
Simultaneously, various regions across Turkey are experiencing widespread planned power outages due to infrastructure maintenance, network renewals, and new facility construction. Affected areas include provinces such as Van, Isparta, Aydın, Kahramanmaraş, İzmir, Konya, Nevşehir, Trabzon, İstanbul, Uşak, and Bursa.
