Konya faces groundwater depletion and 704 sinkholes
Groundwater levels in Konya, Turkey, continue to decline despite recent rainfall, according to geological experts. Prof. Dr. Fetullah Arık, Head of the Geological Engineering Department at Konya Technical University, noted that while recent precipitation offers hope, measurements do not yet show a significant increase in groundwater levels.
The region is facing a severe environmental crisis, with 704 of the approximately 734 known sinkholes in the area located specifically in Konya. To mitigate further depletion, experts are advising farmers to avoid heavy reliance on groundwater during the current planting season. Instead, they recommend waiting for soil to be sufficiently moistened by rainfall before planting.
Prof. Dr. Arık emphasized the need for more effective and permanent planning regarding water usage in the region to protect remaining groundwater resources.
