Konya Plain begins harvest of water-efficient red radishes
The harvest of early-season red radishes has begun in the Konya Plain, a major agricultural hub in Turkey. Farmers are increasingly shifting toward crops like radishes, carrots, and cabbage because they require significantly less water and have shorter growth cycles compared to traditional crops like corn, wheat, and barley.
Producer Şükrü Pullu noted that the early varieties reach maturity in approximately 45 to 50 days. The harvest, which is largely performed by women, is expected to continue for three to four months. While current hot weather has slightly impacted demand, producers anticipate sales will increase as temperatures cool and schools reopen.
Currently, radishes are being sold from the field for an average of 20 Turkish Lira per kilogram. The production aims to address increasing drought conditions through crop diversification and water-efficient farming practices.
