Turkey reports surge of violent incidents and traffic accidents
In recent days Turkey has seen a series of public‑safety incidents. In Şanlıurfa’s Akçakale district a stolen car was driven into a state‑run irrigation canal; the driver later called his family to say he was alive and had fled abroad. In Konya, an apartment manager was stabbed in the abdomen during a debt dispute, and a red kite injured on a farm was rescued by a local farmer. A wedding in Bursa turned violent when a music dispute led to three people being stabbed. A dog bite in Bolu left a seven‑year‑old child with a facial wound.
Separate traffic‑related events include the enactment of a new traffic‑law amendment (Law 7574) on 27 February 2026 that imposes 180 000 TL fines, vehicle bans and driver‑license suspensions for road‑rage behaviour, and officials say the measure has already cut road‑violence by about half. Nevertheless, several night‑time crashes involving alcohol‑impaired drivers were reported in Cyprus, leading to arrests. In Malatya a tractor was driven over a group during a livestock‑grazing dispute, seriously injuring a village guard. Finally, two sheep fell into a sinkhole caused by a water leak in Karatay, Konya, and were rescued by emergency crews.
