Konya wheat market becomes a gathering spot for pigeon flocks

In Konya, Turkey, the Büyük Buğday Pazarı (Great Wheat Market) has become a regular gathering spot for flocks of pigeons. The birds arrive in large numbers during the early morning and late afternoon to feed on wheat and barley found in truck trailers and spread across the ground.

Local traders view the presence of the birds as a symbol of abundance and prosperity. Some merchants follow a tradition of leaving portions of grain accessible, with some even choosing not to set up tents to ensure the birds can feed freely. Traders noted that the pigeons also assist in cleaning spilled grain from the market floor.

Agricultural engineer Bahadır Han Güçlü and local merchants described the daily occurrence as a visual spectacle that brings a sense of peace and happiness to the market environment.
