KDKMP cooperatives expand roles in social aid and food distribution
The Indonesian government is expanding the operational role of the Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih (KDKMP) to serve as a hub for economic activity and social assistance at the village level. Recent field inspections by various ministers have confirmed that several KDKMP locations are already operational, providing essential goods such as subsidized rice (SPHP), LPG, cooking oil, and fertilizer.
Social assistance programs, including the Family Hope Program (PKH) and Non-Cash Food Assistance (BPNT), are being trialed through these cooperatives. This scheme aims to allow beneficiaries to access funds and purchase necessities directly at local cooperative outlets, reducing the need for long travel to bank branches. Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf noted that the process involves collaboration with state-owned banks (Himbara) to provide services directly at the cooperatives.
Regarding civil servant (ASN) salaries, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Bima Arya stated that using KDKMP as a distribution channel is currently a possibility under study and is not a mandatory or final policy. The government is also working to ensure food security through these cooperatives, with BULOG supporting the supply of stabilized food stocks to various regions across Indonesia.
