Koper Diocese celebrates 50th anniversary of restoration
The Diocese of Koper has commenced a major jubilee celebration marking the 50th anniversary of its restoration and expansion. During a solemn mass at the Church of the Assumption of Mary in Koper, Bishop Peter Štumpf addressed a congregation of clergy, religious orders, and faithful from across the region, spanning from Bovca to Sečovelj.
As part of the ceremony, the Bishop blessed candles and loaves of bread to be distributed among parishes. The candles serve as symbols of connection to Christ, while the bread represents the unity of the community. Bishop Štumpf reflected on the long history of the diocese, which dates back to 599, and honored the predecessors who maintained the faith through various historical periods.
Addressing modern challenges, the Bishop noted declining birth rates, fewer recipients of sacraments, and a decrease in spiritual vocations. He called for closer cooperation between priests and parishes, emphasizing the need to remain present for the sick, the elderly, the lonely, and those in remote areas. He also encouraged the laity to actively support the future of their parishes and to reach out to those who have distanced themselves from the church community.
