Slovenia Sovereignty Day protests in Koper disrupt state ceremony

The state celebration of Slovenia's Sovereignty Day in Koper, marking the 1991 withdrawal of the Yugoslav People's Army, was marked by political tension and protests. During a speech by Prime Minister Janez Janša, a group of approximately 40 to 50 protesters disrupted the ceremony with whistling and shouting.

Police intervened to maintain public order, identifying three individuals for violating the Law on Public Gatherings. Two of these individuals were issued payment orders. One protester, Ljuba Miljuševič, reported receiving a fine of 1,750 euros.

The event saw significant political boycotts; President Nataša Pirc Musar and various opposition parties did not attend. Critics of the ceremony, including members of the Freedom Movement and the Left, expressed disagreement with the government's framing of the holiday and the presence of military and police forces.
