Koprivnica city park spruce removal due to bark beetle infestation

Authorities in Koprivnica have initiated the removal of spruce trees in the central city park to combat an infestation of the spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus). The invasive pest was identified during the summer, leading to advanced decay in several trees and posing a risk to surrounding conifers.

Experts from the Croatian Forestry Institute and the Forest Protection Institute confirmed the infestation. Dr. Dinka Matošević, head of the Forest Protection Institute, recommended removing all spruce trees at the source of the infection. Due to the high probability of larvae being present under the bark of trees within a 10-meter radius, even those without visible symptoms, proactive removal is necessary to prevent further spread.

Environmental factors, including high temperatures and prolonged drought, have weakened the trees, making them more susceptible to the beetles. Additionally, officials warned of safety risks for citizens, as dried branches may fall and weakened trees could be uprooted by strong winds. Because the park is located within a protected cultural-historical zone, the removal of seven spruce trees required prior approval from the Bjelovar Regional Conservation Service of the Ministry of Culture and Media.
