Sveti Ivan Žabno hosts 19th International Folklore Festival “Iz bakine škrinje”

The 19th International Folklore Festival “Iz bakine škrinje” opened in the Croatian municipality of Sveti Ivan Žabno, marking the first time the town has hosted the event. Municipal mayor Nenad Bošnjak welcomed the participants in the town hall, emphasizing the festival’s role in showcasing cultural heritage and fostering understanding among nations.

The opening evening featured performances by folk dance groups from Mexico (Bailando por México), Chile’s Easter Island (Mahia Rapa Nui), Slovakia (Hont), Austria (Hajdenjaki), and local Croatian ensembles including KUD “Tomislav”. The festival’s first night took place on Zrinski Square in Koprivnica, drawing large crowds to view the colorful costumes, dynamic choreography, and traditional music. Festival organizer Nada Šešić highlighted the event’s growth over 19 years, noting its contribution to regional cultural exchange and tourism.

The program continues with additional evenings in Sveti Ivan Žabno and a gala finale on Saturday, aiming to strengthen ties between participating communities and promote the preservation of folk traditions for future generations.
