Koralmbahn railway boosts Klagenfurt business and shifts regional travel

The opening of the Koralmbahn railway has led to significant economic and operational changes in the region. Gastronomy businesses near the Klagenfurt main station report revenue increases of up to 30 percent, driven by increased foot traffic and travel groups from Styria, particularly Graz. The new connection has shortened travel times, facilitating more day trips between Carinthia and Styria.

However, the shift in rail operations has drawn criticism from the passenger association ‘Fahrgast Kärnten’. While the new southern route features an hourly schedule, the Interregio service on the old southern route via St. Veit and Friesach continues to use outdated train sets. Critics highlight issues with the lack of electronic seat reservation systems, minimal differences between first and second-class compartments, and the discontinuation of food and beverage services. The ÖBB has stated that these current train sets are a transitional solution, with new carriages expected by 2028.
