Kordelio‑Evosmos municipality in Greece renamed Eleftherio‑Kordelio‑Evosmos

Greek Deputy Minister of Interior Vasilis Spanakis signed a draft presidential decree to rename the municipality of Kordelio‑Evosmos to "Eleftherio‑Kordelio‑Evosmos". The change restores the historic toponym "Eleftherio", honoring the settlement of Greek refugees after World War II and linking the area to former Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos.

The amendment follows a unanimous decision of the municipal council, prompted by a proposal from Mayor Eleftherios Alexandridis. The northern Greek region, which hosted thousands of refugees, experienced a population surge from the 1950s onward, including the settlement of around 3,500 Sarakatsani families.

The rename seeks to reflect the area’s multi‑decadal history and preserve a name that has been used locally for over a century despite previous administrative reforms that omitted it.
