Korea AeroSpace Administration releases 67,000 satellite images for AI development
The Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) has announced the free release of approximately 67,000 high-resolution standard satellite images to support the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The images, captured by the multipurpose practical satellites KOMPSAT-3 and KOMPSAT-3A, have undergone geometric and radiometric corrections, allowing companies to use them immediately for AI model training, verification, and service development without additional processing.
The released dataset consists of optical images of international locations captured in 2025, specifically selected for low cloud cover. The resolution ranges from 0.55m to 2.8m depending on the satellite and specific imagery type. While companies are permitted to commercialize AI models and services developed using these images, the direct sale or redistribution of the raw images is strictly prohibited.
To access the data, interested individuals or legal entities must submit a ‘National Satellite Standard Image Request Form’ to KASA for review. The agency plans to expand this initiative significantly, aiming to release 300,000 standard images by 2030 and over 600,000 images by 2035 to foster a private-sector-led satellite information industry ecosystem.
