Korea Coast Guard deploys AI patrol drones for coastal safety

The Korea Coast Guard has begun deploying specialized coastal patrol drones to improve safety management in hard-to-reach areas such as tidal flats, breakwaters, and tetrapods. The initial deployment includes five drones stationed at key locations, including the Haneulbada and Yeongheung sub-stations in Incheon, as well as stations in Taean, Pyeongtaek, and Boryeong.

These drones are equipped with optical and thermal imaging cameras, as well as AI-based technology for detecting people and objects, allowing for effective monitoring during the night or in heavy sea fog. The units feature wind resistance of up to 14m/s, waterproof capabilities, and integrated speakers for safety broadcasts. They are also capable of dropping life-saving equipment to victims to secure the golden hour before rescue boats arrive.

The Coast Guard plans a phased rollout, aiming to deploy a total of 154 drones to 77 coastal sub-stations across the country by 2029. This expansion will include increasing the number of drones annually and providing specialized flight training for field officers.
