Korea Coast Guard faces vessel aging and safety crisis

The Korea Coast Guard is facing scrutiny over aging vessels and recurring maritime accidents. Data released by National Assembly members Shin Jang-sik and Kim Sun-kyo reveals that 84 out of 371 vessels (22.6%) have exceeded their legal service life. Among the 69 aging vessels that underwent safety inspections, 98.6% received the lowest safety rating of Grade 3.

Recent accidents have highlighted these vulnerabilities. In March 2024, a new 85 billion won vessel collided with a breakwater in Incheon shortly after its completion. Additionally, a 17 billion won vessel was decommissioned after flooding due to management lapses during maintenance. Critics have pointed out that disciplinary actions for the 32 individuals involved in recent accidents have been lenient, with 22 receiving only warnings or cautions.

Concerns are also rising regarding the patrol of Dokdo. Several key vessels responsible for monitoring the area, including the 5,000-ton 5001 vessel, have experienced frequent breakdowns and high repair costs. Despite the urgent need for replacement, the 2027 government budget reflects only 4.4% of the total funds required to replace the 33 aging vessels identified in the Coast Guard's mid-term financial plan.
