Korea Consumer Agency flags plant‑based melatonin products exceeding prescription limits

The Korea Consumer Agency examined 30 plant‑based melatonin foods sold as general products and found that 27 of them contain melatonin levels above the typical prescription dose of 2 mg per day, with some reaching 12 mg – six times the recommended amount. The agency also reviewed 100 online advertisements, noting that 58 used language that could mislead consumers into treating the products as medicines or sleep‑aid supplements.

Based on the findings, the agency urged six sellers to halt sales and asked the remaining firms to correct labeling, reduce melatonin content, and add safety warnings. No fines or penalties were imposed, as the recommendations are voluntary. The agency plans to propose separate safety and labeling standards for plant‑based melatonin products to the relevant ministries.
