Korea Consumer Agency warns of high sodium in convenience store kimbap

A comparative study by the Korea Consumer Agency of 12 convenience store kimbap products has revealed significant variations in ingredient ratios, pricing, and nutritional content.

Key findings indicate that sodium levels in a single roll of kimbap can reach up to 70% of the recommended daily intake (760–1393 mg). The agency warned that consumers frequently pairing kimbap with cup noodles—a habit reported by 68.9% of surveyed consumers—risk excessive sodium consumption. To balance nutrition, the agency recommends pairing kimbap with low-sodium foods, milk, or eggs.

Nutritional analysis also showed that kimbap rolls are often insufficient in calories and carbohydrates for a full meal, while fat content varies widely between products. Regarding ingredients, tuna content in tuna kimbap ranged from 16.5% to 21.9%, and bulgogi content in bulgogi kimbap ranged from 13.1% to 23.7%.

All 12 tested products met safety standards for heavy metals, microorganisms, and food additives. Prices varied by type and brand, with differences of up to 800 won observed between certain products. Consumers are advised to check total weight, ingredient ratios, and nutritional information when purchasing.
