Korea Fair Trade Commission Chair faces scrutiny over enforcement and bias

During a National Assembly audit of the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC), Chairperson Joo Byung-ki outlined plans to strengthen economic sanctions against companies that refuse investigations and to increase procedural transparency. Joo proposed raising fines to international standards and introducing measures such as business suspension or registration cancellation for repeat cartel offenders. He also emphasized monitoring monopolies in digital sectors, including delivery apps and semiconductor markets, and improving consumer protection in areas like wedding venues and golf courses.

However, Representative Shin Dong-wook of the People Power Party criticized Joo’s leadership, accusing him of ideological bias and appointing non-experts to key positions. Shin alleged that Joo has engaged in “trial by public opinion” by discussing unconfirmed investigation details on media outlets sympathetic to the ruling party, which he claimed could be viewed as a premature disclosure of facts. In response to these criticisms, Joo stated he would strive to ensure his actions do not appear biased and would work to maintain impartiality across all media platforms.
