Korea Heritage Service launches regional revitalization and education projects

The Korea Heritage Service has announced several initiatives to revitalize regional areas through cultural heritage. As part of the ‘2027 Regional National Heritage Education Activation Project,’ 25 programs have been selected from 84 applicants. These programs aim to provide diverse educational experiences for students and local residents, integrating traditional heritage with modern technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital content, and biotechnology.

Additionally, the agency is launching new projects to transform heritage sites into tourism hubs. The ‘National Heritage Stay’ project will select approximately 10 historic houses to be renovated into lodging facilities that offer both accommodation and cultural experiences. This initiative includes support for improving amenities like heating, electricity, and sanitation while preserving the original character of the buildings.

Furthermore, the ‘National Heritage-based Landmark Regeneration’ project will select three pilot locations to connect heritage sites with surrounding commercial districts and residential alleys. The goal is to create walking axes that integrate local stories, night-time programs, and specialized local products, aiming to develop ten sites similar to Gyeongju’s Hwangridan-gil by 2031.
