Korea hosts 2026 International Island Policy Forum in Yeosu

The Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) and the Korea Island Development Institute (KIDI) co-hosted the ‘2026 International Island Policy Forum’ in Yeosu and Gaedo, South Korea. The event brought together approximately 160 domestic and international experts, local government officials, and residents to discuss sustainable development strategies for islands and fishing villages.

Discussions focused on addressing complex crises such as population decline, aging demographics, climate change, and vulnerabilities in essential infrastructure like transportation, healthcare, and energy. Key sessions explored resilient island strategies, including the impact of climate change on island economies and the implementation of ‘island transportation indices’ to improve mobility.

Participants also emphasized shifting the perspective of island management from mere tourism and development toward preserving the unique cultural and ecological values of these regions while ensuring the quality of life for residents. Proposed models included community-based tourism, improved access to medical and educational services, and the creation of sustainable economic networks through marine leisure and local resources.
