Korea Institute for Animal Products Quality Evaluation to recycle abalone shells into poultry feed

The Korea Institute for Animal Products Quality Evaluation (KAPE) has launched a regional cooperation project to recycle discarded abalone shells into feed for laying hens. Working alongside Gyeongsang National University and the local company Eco Farm, the initiative aims to transform high-calcium fishery by-products into valuable livestock resources.

The project, structured as a ‘regional anchor project,’ involves a division of expertise: Gyeongsang National University will research the feasibility of using abalone shells in feed, while Eco Farm will produce eggs using the specialized feed in actual farming environments. KAPE will utilize professional equipment and quality assessment technologies to analyze changes in egg quality, specifically measuring shell strength, thickness, and Haugh units.

By successfully replacing traditional calcium sources with abalone shells, the project seeks to reduce the environmental burden and disposal costs associated with fishery waste. Additionally, the initiative is expected to enhance the competitiveness of local companies through eco-friendly feed development and provide farmers with more diverse feed options.
