SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won has announced that SK hynix is considering the establishment of a semiconductor joint venture factory in Japan. Speaking at the 15th Korea-Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry meeting in Sendai, Chey stated the company is evaluating the feasibility of producing memory chips in Japan to meet surging AI demand and reduce production costs. He noted that the company is looking across Japan for locations with abundant power and water supplies.

This potential expansion follows SK hynix's recent groundbreaking of an advanced packaging plant in Indiana, USA, and aligns with a broader strategy to secure global production bases. The move is also seen as a way to strengthen ties with Japanese customers and suppliers, such as Tokyo Electron and Sony, and to leverage Japan's government subsidies for semiconductor manufacturers.

During the summit, business leaders from both nations signed a joint statement to strengthen economic solidarity. The agreement focuses on enhancing cooperation in critical mineral supply chains, energy security—including the mutual exchange of oil, petroleum products, and LNG—and future industries such as AI, semiconductors, and clean energy. Participants also discussed expanding cooperation to include regional businesses, startups, and research institutions to create a more integrated economic ecosystem.
