Korea Maritime & Ocean University launches AI competency program

Korea Maritime & Ocean University has announced the development of the ‘CORE-MORE’ AI competency enhancement program, designed to improve the artificial intelligence capabilities of both students and staff. The initiative is scheduled for a pilot run during the second semester of the 2026 academic year.

The program is structured into two distinct stages: ‘CORE’, which focuses on fundamental competencies such as responsible AI usage and result verification, and ‘MORE’, which provides advanced training for applying AI to specific majors, career paths, and professional tasks. The university plans to accumulate self-produced educational content within its Learning Management System (LMS) to facilitate continuous, repetitive learning.

For students, the program aims to integrate AI with maritime expertise to produce specialized outputs, with training records managed via e-portfolios to assist in job placement. For staff, the focus is on enhancing administrative and educational support through AI-driven workflow improvements. Following the pilot phase, the university intends to expand the program's integration with existing curricula and certification training starting in the 2027 academic year.
