Korea National Park Service issues autumn hiking safety guidelines
The Korea National Park Service has released safety guidelines and walking techniques for hikers during the autumn foliage season. This follows data showing 304 safety accidents in national parks from 2024 through August this year, including 28 fatalities. Notably, 30 accidents occurred on unauthorized trails, accounting for 30% of those fatalities.
To prevent injuries such as fractures and exhaustion, the service recommends selecting trails based on five difficulty levels—ranging from 'very easy' to 'very difficult'—that match an individual's physical strength and experience. Specific walking methods were advised: 'rhythm walking' for flat ground, 'rest walking' for uphills to reduce muscle strain, 'knee-buffering walking' for downhills to absorb impact, and 'zigzag walking' for steep slopes.
Hikers are cautioned about temperature fluctuations, slippery leaves, and wet rocks. The service advises preparing layered clothing, proper hiking gear, and sufficient water. Individuals with hypertension or heart disease are urged to use rest areas frequently. Peak foliage is expected in various parks, including Odaesan on October 16 and Seoraksan on October 25.
