Korean Air prepares for Asiana merger with Starlink Wi-Fi and mileage integration
As Korean Air prepares for its December 17 merger with Asiana Airlines, the carrier is rolling out several major service and operational updates. Starting September 15, Korean Air will offer free high-speed Wi-Fi via Starlink on select widebody aircraft, including Airbus A350-900s and Boeing 777-300ERs. This service allows for streaming, gaming, and cloud use, though voice and video calls are restricted. Asiana Airlines will also introduce Starlink-based Wi-Fi on 10 of its aircraft.
Regarding the merger, the Fair Trade Commission has approved a mileage integration plan. Asiana's existing mileage will be managed separately for 10 years, allowing customers to use it on Korean Air routes. Customers can choose to convert Asiana mileage to Korean Air mileage at a 1:1 ratio for flight earnings and 1:0.82 for partner earnings. To protect consumers, Korean Air must maintain bonus seat availability on long-haul routes at levels consistent with the 2023 peak for the next decade.
Operationally, Korean Air will begin migrating Asiana flight numbers (OZ) to Korean Air numbers (KE) and transferring booking information between November 2 and December 3 to minimize passenger disruption ahead of the official integration.
