Korean Air completes smart cargo terminal upgrade at Incheon International Airport

Korean Air has announced the completion of a large-scale modernization project at its cargo terminal in Incheon International Airport. The upgrade, which took place between June 2025 and September 2026, aims to transform the facility into a ‘Smart Terminal’ through the integration of advanced automated systems.

Key technological enhancements include the introduction of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and the full replacement of Elevating Transfer Vehicles (ETVs) used to move containers and pallets. Additionally, the terminal’s bypass system, which allows cargo to move directly from trucks to the shipside, has been expanded from one to two automated lines. These improvements are expected to increase hourly Unit Load Device (ULD) handling from 18 to 30 units, resulting in an overall cargo processing capacity increase of more than 25%.

The project also focused on improving labor conditions and safety by automating heavy lifting tasks and upgrading infrastructure, such as installing air conditioning and LED lighting. Following the completion at Incheon, Korean Air plans to modernize its cargo terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, with a target completion date in 2027.
