Korean Air hosts inaugural K-FDM seminar to enhance flight safety
Ahead of its upcoming integrated airline launch in December, Korean Air hosted the first K-FDM Seminar at its headquarters in Seoul. The event brought together approximately 80 experts, including representatives from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Korea Institute of Aviation Safety Technology (KIAST), and 13 domestic airlines.
The seminar focused on Flight Data Monitoring (FDM), a system that collects and analyzes data such as pilot maneuvers, wind speed, and terrain to identify potential risks and improve operational safety. Discussions included the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into data analysis, establishing verification processes for analysts, and fostering a ‘Just Culture’ to encourage voluntary reporting by pilots.
Participants agreed to form a working group to maintain practical cooperation and build a flight data sharing ecosystem. Global industry leaders GE Aerospace and Teledyne Controls participated as sponsors, sharing innovative solutions. Bennet Allen Walsh, Head of Aviation Safety and Security at Korean Air, stated the initiative aims to link scattered data into a national safety network and eventually expand into a global cooperation network.
