Korean Dental Association seeks self-disciplinary power after implant deaths

The Korean Dental Association (KDA) has called for the authority to implement self-disciplinary measures to combat illegal medical advertising and “factory-style” dental treatments. During a National Assembly audit of the Health and Welfare Committee, KDA Executive Director Lee Sang-gu argued that low-cost advertisements on social media lure large numbers of patients, leading to rushed, high-volume procedures that compromise safety.

The call for reform follows recent patient deaths during implant procedures at a specific clinic. The clinic's director, Son Dong-guk, admitted to the deaths during questioning and apologized for posting promotional videos on YouTube just days after a second fatality. Investigations revealed that the clinic had a history of emergency calls and complaints, yet continued to attract high patient volumes.

In response, the Ministry of Health and Welfare indicated it would review ways to expand the self-regulatory and disciplinary roles of professional medical groups. Members of the National Assembly also expressed agreement on the need to discuss institutional improvements to enhance professional oversight.
