Korean film ‘Dragon Wars: D-War’ surges on Netflix

The 2007 Korean science-fiction fantasy film ‘Dragon Wars: D-War,’ directed by Shim Hyung-rae, has experienced a sudden surge in popularity on Netflix nearly two decades after its original release. Following its addition to the streaming platform on August 6, the film reached the top 10 on Netflix’s global movie charts, peaking at number 6 around August 10.

In several European markets, including France, Germany, and Italy, the film climbed to the number 2 spot on local charts. The movie, which features ‘imugi’—mythical serpents from Korean folklore—was a significant box-office success in South Korea in 2007, drawing 8.4 million viewers, though it received mixed critical reviews regarding its screenplay and direction.

Analysts suggest the film’s resurgence is driven by a global appetite for Korean content and its accessibility as a lighthearted fantasy action movie. While the film was a commercial hit in its home country, it is currently unavailable on Netflix in Korea.
