Korean Intellectual Property Office subsidy projects face budget cuts and restructuring

An analysis of the 2026 government subsidy extension evaluation report reveals that none of the seven projects under the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) received a ‘normal implementation’ rating. Out of the approximately 80.6 billion won in allocated subsidies, the projects were categorized into four improvements, two budget reductions, and one abolition or integration.

Key issues identified include overlaps with other agencies and difficulties in measuring qualitative performance. For instance, the ‘Intellectual Property Creation Support’ project was noted for similarities with other organizations' programs. Additionally, the ‘IP Utilization Startup and Growth Support’ project faced budget cuts due to redundancy with internal and external departmental projects.

National Assembly member Gu Ja-geun noted that while KIPO's organizational role has expanded, the substance of its projects has not kept pace. He emphasized the need to verify whether existing budgets are effectively achieving the core goals of intellectual property creation, protection, and utilization rather than simply expanding scale.
